Gregory D. Smith
Chairman and CEO
Mr. Smith founded Maplewood Senior Living and has become a leading innovator in the senior housing industry. Prior to entering senior housing, Mr. Smith was a successful real estate investor in the hospitality, residential, and office sectors. His career spans 25 years and a collective value of investments has exceeded $800 million. As Chairman and CEO, he oversees all aspects of the Company and is actively involved in operations and growth.
As an active member in the community, Mr. Smith serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ability Beyond, a non-profit organization currently employing over 900 associates and engaging over 500 volunteers. Mr. Smith is also a member on the board of directors of the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter and Western Connecticut Health Network Development Fund, Inc., and a member of the Network's Foundation and Strategic Planning Committee, which is tasked with planning for Danbury Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, and New Milford Hospital.
A native of Massachusetts, Smith currently resides with his family in Fairfield County, Connecticut, where he remains active with civic and community-based organizations.
Thomas Y. Gaston
Executive Vice President of Acquisitions and Development
Mr. Gaston has worked for nearly 30 years in real estate development, including 16 years dedicated to the luxury senior housing sector. Gaston began his career with Leggat McCall Properties and Amicus Healthcare. The breadth of his experience involves managing the development of more than 2,000 senior living units over his career. Gaston’s experienced also includes executive leadership roles at other well-regarded regional senior living organizations, where he oversaw Development and Acquisitions. Additionally, Mr. Gaston co-founded Northbridge Senior Living in Burlington, Massachusetts.
Executive Vice President of Operations
Mr. Herlet oversees all daily operations for Maplewood Senior Living. With a master’s degree in Gerontology from Miami University of Ohio, his career spans nearly 25 years in the senior housing industry, including executive leadership roles at several other national senior living organizations. He has managed over 1,600 units of senior housing throughout his career. He is known as a catalyst for operational excellence in the senior housing industry, including specialties in growth, leadership, resident satisfaction, and care, as well as stabilization. In addition, Mr. Herlet is the President of Maplewood Senior Living HEART Foundation, Inc.
Arthur E. Miller, Esq
Mr. Miller brings over three decades of experience practicing law in Connecticut. Mr. Miller handles all legal issues pertaining to Maplewood Senior Living, its entities, and related businesses. His specialties include commercial real estate and commercial lending. Most recently, he was a partner at Tierney, Zullo, Flaherty and Murphy, PC, in Norwalk. A Stamford native, Mr. Miller has lived in Newtown, Connecticut, for more than 20 years with his family.
Michael Toce, RN
Vice President of Clinical Operations
Michael Toce brings his extensive healthcare experience to lead the clinical operations for Maplewood Senior Living. Mr. Toce is known for establishing and managing high-performance clinical teams, and is focused on superior service delivery, resident safety, and quality care. Previous to his time at Maplewood, he served as Director of Healthcare Operations at another well-regarded regional senior living operator. Prior to that, Mr. Toce spent time at Yale University School of Medicine, Aetna, and Travelers. A Connecticut native, Mr. Toce lives in North Haven, CT, with his family.
Vice President of Operations
With more than 25 years of healthcare experience, Lawrence Katz began his career as a registered nurse working with individuals with developmental disabilities. A seasoned member in the senior housing industry, Lawrence has held regional and executive roles for several nationally recognized senior living operators. Throughout his career, Lawrence has operated in six states and combines all of his experiences to better serve the Maplewood Senior Living resident population and the employees who care for them.
Andrea S. Ellen
Vice President of Marketing and Communications
With more than 25 years as a marketing and communications professional in the luxury senior housing and healthcare industry, Andrea Ellen has served as an executive or consultant to a multitude of national and regional senior living owners and operators. Ms. Ellen is responsible for all communications and marketing initiatives for Maplewood Senior Living and its communities. Ms. Ellen has served on the board of directors for the Children's Center of CT, a non-profit developmental preschool where her three children attended, as well as The Continuum of Care in New Haven, a not-for-profit foundation providing psychiatric, housing, and healthcare services to adults throughout Connecticut.
Vice President of Acquisitions & Development
Mr. Deery has been in commercial real estate investment, development, and operations for over 30 years. With a focus on a variety of assets including senior living, office, residential, and medical office in national markets, Deery oversees all of Maplewood’s sourcing, underwriting, and deal structuring, while creating value for both senior living and healthcare real estate projects. Prior to joining Maplewood, Deery has led nationally recognized firms such as Lincoln Properties, Opus Corp, and CBRE. Andrew is a graduate of the University of Vermont and a licensed broker in Massachusetts and Connecticut. A Massachusetts native, Deery lives in Fairfield County, Connecticut, with his family .
Vice President of Business Development
With over 25 years of sales and marketing experience in the senior housing and healthcare industries, Karen is a dynamic leader with a reputation for excellence. Her expertise is in building top-notch teams through strategic management. Prior to Karen's arrival at Maplewood, her career includes holding executive management positions with both national and regional luxury senior living providers. Karen lives on the South Shore of Massachusetts with her husband and children.
Senior Culinary Services Director
Ron Pascoe has over 30 years of culinary experience, including management positions within the hospitality, restaurant, and senior living industries. Ron oversees all of Culinary Services for Maplewood Senior Living and its communities. A graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he currently resides in Southbury, Connecticut, with his wife and children.
Vice President of Resident Experience and Training
Bonnie has served Maplewood Senior Living in a variety of management roles, including both Operations and External Business Development. Responsible for overseeing Maplewood Senior Living and its communities' regulations and compliance efforts, as well as overall resident experience. Prior to joining Maplewood in 2010, Bonnie had over a decade of experience in the hospitality and senior housing industry. Bonnie resides in Southbury, Connecticut, with her family.
