We take pride in caring for residents and for our entire Maplewood family, which includes our associates. In 2013, one of our associates, Kristin Hocker, had a life-changing event and sadly lost her leg. Without hesitation, President & CEO Gregory Smith and a team of colleagues put into motion the effort to provide financial assistance to Kristin and her four young children.
Thus, our senior living foundation was brought to life. Maplewood’s HEART Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity organization founded by Maplewood CEO & President Gregory Smith and led by Kristin Hocker, the foundation director and first grant recipient. Our mission is to give support and financial help to Maplewood associates and their families who find themselves facing challenging times of unexpected, life-altering circumstances — including serious illness, a tragic accident, sudden death in the family, significant house-related damage, or the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Every contribution to our senior living foundation makes a difference. Our communities host monthly HEART Foundation events, and each February, we hold our Annual HEART Drive. Associates are encouraged to donate through biweekly payroll deductions or contribute through fundraising efforts in each of their specific communities. We also encourage residents and families to contribute to the HEART Foundation.

I have experienced repeated serious health issues starting in July of 2021, that prohibited me from working and included two separate hospital stays. I had Aflac insurance for the first three months, but following that, we had only my wife’s income. Normally my income provides most of our living.
As a former member of the HEART Foundation Selection Committee, I struggled with asking for their assistance.
