National Volunteer Month is a time to recognize the people who generously share their time, talents, and compassion with others. Across Maplewood Senior Living communities, volunteers help create meaningful moments of connection, joy, and purpose each day.
From students and community groups to musicians and animal advocates, each volunteer brings something unique. Their presence not only enhances daily life for residents but also builds relationships that often leave a lasting impact on everyone involved.
When a local Girl Scout troop visited Maplewood at Orange to sell cookies, the afternoon became about much more than a seasonal tradition. Residents enjoyed meeting the scouts, hearing about their activities, and sharing stories from their own younger years.
The visit created a warm intergenerational exchange filled with smiles, conversation, and community spirit. Moments like these remind us that simple traditions can become powerful opportunities for connection.
Every other week, members of the Staples football team volunteer their time at Maplewood at Southport to help host bingo with residents. While one student serves as the caller, others sit alongside residents to assist with cards and most importantly, engage in conversation.
What has developed is far more meaningful than a game. Friendships have formed between generations decades apart, built through laughter, curiosity, and genuine care. Residents enjoy the students’ enthusiasm and companionship, while the players gain perspective and the value of service to others.
Their coach shared that experiences like these help young people become stronger individuals by developing kindness, listening skills, and human connection.
Every Wednesday evening, Maplewood at Newtown comes alive with music, warmth, and connection thanks to volunteer Mike Bender.
Mike generously donated his personal organ so it could remain in the neighborhood, and each week he returns to play for residents. His visits have become a cherished tradition, with residents gathering to listen, sing along, and enjoy the uplifting atmosphere he creates.
What makes Mike’s contribution so meaningful is not only the music itself, but the kindness and consistency behind it. Residents eagerly anticipate his weekly visits and often share how much his presence means to them. Through one thoughtful act of generosity, Mike has helped foster comfort, joy, and a true sense of community.
Laura Lindauer serves as an activity assistant at Maplewood at Chardon on Sundays and Mondays, while also volunteering her time in meaningful ways throughout the week.
She established both a vocal choir and hand chimes choir, giving residents the opportunity to rehearse together and perform quarterly concerts for families. Laura also sings for holidays and special celebrations, bringing added joy to important occasions.
Her connection to the community is personal: her mother, Arlene, was once a resident. Through her dedication, Laura has helped residents build purpose, routine, and a sense of belonging through shared commitment and performance.
Since the earliest days of Maplewood at Princeton, Reverend JJ Simpson-Keelan and her pet therapy dog, Rusty, have been a trusted and uplifting presence.
What began as therapy dog visits evolved into something even deeper. Today, JJ leads a welcoming book club and discussion group, while also offering residents guidance, companionship, and compassionate support.
Residents across multiple neighborhoods look forward to time with JJ and Rusty. Their visits bring comfort, conversation, and reassurance, helping many feel connected.
During National Volunteer Month, we proudly recognize the individuals whose generosity helps make our communities stronger, warmer, and more connected. Volunteers like Mike, Laura, Reverend JJ, and so many others remind us that meaningful impact often begins with simply showing up and sharing time with others. Their dedication enriches daily life for residents and helps create the vibrant sense of community that defines Maplewood.
